Fending off the ghost is one of the first things you’ll need to do before setting up cameras to gather evidence in Phasmophobia. One of the best ways to do that is by using Smudge Sticks. You can bring a maximum of 4 Smudge Sticks on a job. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about how to use Smudge Sticks to fend off ghosts in Phasmophobia.
How to Use Smudge Sticks in Phasmophobia
Smudge Sticks in Phasmophobia can give you a little breathing room if the ghost is around and ready to enter the ‘Hunt’ phase. In order to use them, you must light them first. There are 2 ways to do it:
- The 1st one is to turn on the lighter, equip a Smudge Stick, and press the ‘F’ key to light it.
- The 2nd one is to place a Smudge Stick on the ground, light it using the lighter, and pick it up.
Remember that if you don’t have access to a lighter, you should also be able to use a candle for the same effect. Another thing to keep in mind is that a Smudge Stick can only be used once. It’s always a good idea to have multiple of these if things start to go sideways.
When to Use Smudge Sticks
The best time to use a Smudge Stick is whenever you feel the ghost is about to enter the ‘Hunt’ phase. The best way to tell that is by looking at the lights. If you see the lights flashing, it means that the ghost has entered the ‘Hunt’ phase. Other indications include a drop in temperature and sounds. As a general rule of thumb, a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius is the sweet spot.
You should always try to use the Smudge Sticks just as the ghost is about to enter the ‘Hunt’ phase. This will give you a brief window to run for your life and hide. Remember that you must be quick about it since the effect of the Smudge Sticks is very short-lived. Unlike the Crucifix, the Smudge Sticks can be used during an active hunt but that won’t stop the ghost in its tracks – it’ll simply stagger them for a couple of seconds.
