Nvidia RTX 3090, 3080 and 3070 graphics cards have been announced and they are coming out later this month. This the new graphics cards around the corner you might be interested in upgrading your system to take advantage of PCIe Gen4 and the higher bandwidth that it has to offer. Here we are going to look into the best PCIe Gen 4 motherboards that you can pair with the Nvidia RTX 3090, 3080 and 3070 graphics cards.

Before heading into the article, it is worth mentioning that PCIe Gen4 is backward compatible with PCIe Gen3. This means that you can install the RTX 30 series cards in your current PCIe Gen3 motherboard.

Do you need PCIe Gen4 for RTX 30 series graphics cards? To answer this question, you should know that the RTX 2080 Ti is able to take full advantage of PCIe Gen3 X8 slots but it is still not able to use all the bandwidth of the X16 slots which you should use for gaming.

The RTX 3080 is going to be more powerful than the RTX 2080, not the Ti. If you are going to play games at 4K then you are not going to have any issues whether you run the RTX 30 series using PCIe Gen3 or 4.

You will feel the difference when you are making use of the different PCIe lanes and are playing at higher refresh rates at a lower resolution than 4K. For example, if you have an M.2 SSD which is sharing the PCIe lanes with your graphics card and are playing games at 1080p or 1440p at 144+ FPS.

All those frames per second can cause issues when using PCIe Gen3 and you might need PCIe Gen4 but that is a very extreme case and the general consumer is not going to need a new motherboard with PCIe Gen4.

On the other hand, with PCIe Gen4, you can take advantage of the higher bandwidth of the supporting graphics cards and the PCIe Gen4 SSDs if you are interested in super-fast transfer speeds, the kinds that the PS5 is boasting right now. If that is something that you are looking for then you can upgrade your motherboard and go with PCIe Gen4.

AMD Vs Intel: Which Should You Pick?

Right off the bat, you have to decide between Intel and AMD platforms. Both are very different right now as Intel does not offer PCIe Gen4 support at the CPU level but there are motherboards that support the feature.

AMD on the other hand offers the feature even on the more mid-range B550 series motherboards. So you do not have to spend a lot of money on a motherboard in order to take advantage of the feature.

If you do take the Intel route then there is a silver lining. You can keep the same motherboard, upgrade to the 11th generation CPUs when they come out and be able to make use of PCIe Gen4. But you will obviously have to wait. With that in mind, we are going to mention

With that out of the way, we can move on to the recommendations.
