Using the Gunsmith, you can customize your weapons in different ways using a ton of Weapon Attachments available to you to build the perfect weapon best suited to your playstyle. Infinity Ward is reworking this mechanic to make it even better in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But how does it all come together? First of all, there is a new concept called Weapon Platforms. There are multiple weapons that can be a part of a particular Weapon Platform. It is important to note that these Weapon Platforms should not be confused with Weapon Types. For instance, the M4 Weapon Platform contains different weapons including 556 Icarus (LMG), M16 (Assault Rifle), FFS Hurricane (Submachine Gun), etc. These weapons that are a part of a Weapon Platform are called Receivers.
In addition to this, we have also got Weapon Attachments. When it comes to these Weapon Attachments, these are divided into 2 separate categories i.e., Platform-specific Attachments and General Attachments.
Platform-specific Attachments
These are specific to a specific Weapon Platform. However, the important thing that you need to note here is that you do not need to unlock a Platform-specific Attachment for its Receivers once you have acquired it for the Base Weapon. As for Weapon Attachments that are a part of it, these include:
- Barrel
- Magazine
- Rear Grip
- Receiver
- Stock
General Attachments
These are General Weapon Attachments that are available for all the weapons regardless of Weapon Platform. One more thing that you should know is that once a General Attachment has been unlocked, it becomes available to use on all the weapons in the game, provided that the weapon supports it. General Attachments include the following:
- Ammunition
- Optic
- Muzzle
- Underbarrel
With the help of Gunsmith 2.0, you are able to unlock different Weapon Attachments way quicker than ever before. No longer do you need to unlock Weapon Attachments for different weapons by being forced to use them whether you want to level it up all the way from Level 1 or not.
