Godfall has got the new free Lightbringer update, along with the new Fire & Darkness expansion, which is out now. Other than that, the game is now available to play on PS4. Here are the details that you need to know about.

Godfall: Lightbringer update, Fire & Darkness, PS4 Release

Incredible new Godfall content rolled out today with a new expansion and free update, Gearbox Publishing announced this morning. Gearbox also hailed that the award-winning game is now available on the PlayStation 4. Godfall is a new ARPG looter slasher developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox Publishing. Godfall takes a fresh approach to looters by only including melee weapons and adding an utterly beautiful artstyle. It does not reinvent the wheel but then again it does not have to as it includes some of the best elements from different games that we love. Here is our review of Godfall.

Godfall Review

Godfall is a looter slasher and not a looter shooter. It only has melee weapons and you need to get up close and personal with enemies in order to kill them and progress. The only piece of gear that you can actually use from afar is your shield. The shield attacks are like any of the other abilities in the game and has a cooldown. But there is much that you can do with it. Apart from blocking and throwing your shield, you can smash it into the ground to stun and damage enemies around you.

Story Lore And Setting Is Mediocre

You play as Orin, one of the few Valorian knights that are left. You have to take on your brother Marcos who has betrayed you and has intentions of ascending to a god. He leaves you for dead but you survive and your goal is to stop Marcos from ending the world.

The lore of the game is there but it is not really in-depth which might be intentional as it allows the player to jump right into the action. During the game, you only talk to two NPCs and what they have to say is pretty straight forward. The game is not lore-rich but and there is some backstory which is a bit cliche and isn’t something that you have not heard or seen before. You are not going to witness any twists that will shock or surprise you.

The story is just a means of justifying why you are doing what you are doing in the game. If you are interested in the lore then there are lore pieces that you can pick up to learn more and I recommend that you check out lore videos from My Name Is Byf that cover the story leading up to the game without any spoilers.

Combat And Gameplay Is Where It Shines Brightest

This is the looter slasher and that is where the game pulls no punches. The melee combat is very fluid and you feel very dominating when taking out waves of enemies. While you do need to get up close and personal with enemies, that does not mean that you have to be on the defensive all the time. You can totally go full-on offensive and that is very rewarding and makes you feel godly.

Enemy waves are rather small and scattered around on the map so they do not get overwhelming like some hacker slashers but note that the enemies are not meat for you to kill in this game. They are very responsive and can dodge and even block your attacks. If you are not careful then even a handful of enemies can kill you.

Low tier enemies are easier to kill and you can even kill them with a single breach attack. The higher level enemies require more skill. Elite enemies have different mechanics and attacks and they will glow red when they use their special attacks.

There are plenty of different weapons in the game and all the different classes of weapons are unique. They offer a different playstyle and they are the best part of the game. They have different moves and playout uniquely. You can only use dual blade special attacks when you are in the heat of battle and landing hits on enemies. The special ability bar is going to diminish over time for the dual blades if you stop attacking enemies.

I can see how this can be challenging and players will take a while to get used to the different weapon types. Finding the weapon type that suits you is going to be the key here. I found that the long sword suited me best. You can have two weapons at the same time and swap between them at any time you want. I used a Polearm as my secondary weapon which proved to be a great combination with the longsword.

In most games, I usually pick a weapon that I like and then stick to it. But the polarity mechanic that does area of effect damage encourages you to have two weapons that you like and switch between them often. This is a cool little feature that encourages you to combo two different weapons which I think is something that players are going to enjoy playing around with.

While this is a hack and slash game, you cannot simply button mash your way to victory. You cannot dodge as many times as you want. The dodge has a minor cooldown and there is no move cancellation either. So the button that you press is locked in. What this means is that you will need a certain degree of skill and planning in order to win in this game.

I was surprised that I was halted from progressing the game very early on and I needed to go back to previous areas in order to progress the game. That being said, the combat is so fluid and feels so good that it is not going to be much of an issue for most people unless you are looking to rush through the game fairly quickly. I would say that the devs have learned from the mistakes of Anthem and have not repeated them or implemented them as poorly. While repetition is there, the implementation and actual gameplay make up for it.

Long story short, this is as close to the combat of God of War that I have seen in a game since God of War.

Skills And Gear

The skill tree is pretty elaborate and you can invest plenty of points in it and get skills that match your playstyle. You get a skill point to invest every time you level up and you can respec any time you want which allows players to try out new builds at any time or respec just before a boss fight. With that in mind, it did not make sense why players need to change the valorplates at the sanctum when they can respec skills at any time and anywhere and the same goes for weapons and other gear.

The valorplates are supposed to be one of the main attractions of the game. At least that is what you think when you look at all the marketing and see how the developers have been teasing them ahead of launch. While they are cool to look at, I think that the variety is just not there and that they are more aesthetic than functional.

Changing your valorplate basically changes the small elemental buff that you get and the element of your ultimate ability, the archon fury. Besides the elemental change, the ultimate either sends out a shockwave that gives you buffs or summons allies to help you in combat in addition to those buffs. You would think that there would be some degree of uniqueness when it comes to the ultimate abilities of the 12 different valorplates but that is just not the case.

If you unlock 3 of these then you have pretty much checked them all out and in most parts of the game, you will not be able to tell the difference between them when it comes to gameplay. That was a major bummer for me as I expected all of them to be unique functionally and that the next one that I unlocked would be much cooler and powerful than the previous. Needless to say, I clocked most of my hours with the default valorplate as I was used to its abilities and I like the Lion look.

It is safe to say that once a player has found that valorplate that matches his or her playstyle they are not going to change back or try new ones as they are functionally similar.

Quick Hunts For Dads, Exploration For Hardcore Players

As I get older I no longer have the time to invest in games that I once used to. I simply cannot keep up with the hardcore grind that some games would have you do in order to keep up with other players. That is where the hunt missions in Godfall come into play. If you have an hour to kill or maybe 30 minutes then you can quickly launch a couple of hunt missions and get the rewards. If you have more time then you can explore the different realms and see what they have to offer.

When you start the game you will play the main story and progress your character. Once you have gone through the main story you will get to the endgame mechanic which is called the Dreamstone. These are missions with a boss at the end which is a bit more challenging. These missions have three phases and have a touch of rogue-like games. The first phase allows you to get buffs that will help you in the other phases. You will also get information regarding the boss. The third phase is where you are going to take on the boss.

The endgame content also includes the ascendant tower of trials. This is similar to endless waves mode in other games. You will go higher in the tower and each level is going to be harder than the previous one. There is no limit to how high you can climb the tower and you will find some of the best gear in the game here.

Dreamstone is much better when it comes to the endgame content. The tower trials can get a bit repetitive and might not be worth the grind for everyone. But if you want to take up the challenge and see how high you can climb then it is a nice challenge to test your skills.

Visuals That Are Truly Next-Gen, Sound Design That Does The Job

I played the game on PC using an RTX 2060 Super with an Intel 9400F and 16GB of RAM. The game ran smoothly at 1440p, 60FPS with very rare dips. The game looks incredible and everything from the art style to effects is what I would call truly next-gen. As soon as I booted the game I could see why it did not release on the Xbox One or PS4. That would just have held the developers and the game back and it was a nice decision by the devs.

Stutters are very rare and often only at the start of the game. Once the game was up and running I did not face any issue what so ever. The game looks very nice even at 1080p. There is no DLSS or ray tracing support but the art style is so incredible that you will not feel the need for ray tracing and I don’t think that reflections would have made a lot of difference. DLSS on the other hand would have been a nice feature to upscale the game to 4K.

The audio and soundtracks are fitting and change according to what happens in the game but it is not something that I would listen to outside of the game. The voice acting is also pretty good and fits the characters that you interact with but as there are only 2 NPC that you can interact with there is not a lot of it which seems like something that could have been improved. Adding a few more lines or a few cutscenes here and there would have made the experience much better. Having a single memorable soundtrack would have also been a major improvement.

Is Godfall Worth The Money?

To answer the question that is on everyone’s mind, I have to say that it depends. The game does not become too repetitive quickly and you can go do those hunt missions over and over to get more loot. I easily clocked 12 hours without feeling the repetitiveness and as I progressed the story I did have a sense of variety but the lack of uniqueness of the valorplates was indeed a bummer for me. Pricing on the Epic Games Store varies according to the region. If you get the game for 31 USD then it makes total sense. But if you have to pay 60 USD then it comes down to how much time you can spend in the game without getting bored.

I think that the major aspect of the game that is going to increase the replayability is the community and whether or not your friends are playing it as well. Cross-play is also going to be a major factor. If the game does support cross-play then that is going to be a major selling point.

For me Godfall was a lot of fun and I even got a personal copy with my own money. The solo experience is worth the 31USD price tag and playing the game with friends is just going to add to the experience and create moments that you are going to remember for the days to come.

Conclusion

Godfall does not reinvent the wheel in any way. It takes elements from different games such as Destiny, other looter shooters and God of War. With that said, what it lacks in fresh mechanics, it makes up with a fresh coat of paint, fluid gameplay and good optimization on PC.

Godfall is not ashamed of taking different mechanics from different games. It does what it does very well. The game does not need any major loot overhauls of rebalancing like other loot games that have released in the past and needed a year to fix or are still being fixed to date. Godfall does not need a redesign. It is fine the way it is. That makes Godfall a uniquely refreshing surprise of 2020.

I did have a lot of fun playing the game and I think that others are going to as well especially when playing with friends. If you are going to play with friends then the 60USD pricing would make sense but if you are going to go through it alone then I would not call it a must-buy game, at least not at launch. You can easily wait for the price to go down until it makes better sense to you.

I can easily give Godfall a 7.5/10. But I do hope that the devs can change things a bit in future updates in order to add variety.

Two advantages PC games have over consoles is the ability to play video games at high FPS and scalability. Godfall has arrived on PC and is quite a good looking game. However, these good looks come at the cost of performance. In my Godfall PC Optimization Guide, I will take you through each of the game’s graphics settings, explain what they do, and recommend the best option for them to get 60 FPS at 1080p on a mid-range PC.

How To Get 60 FPS In Godfall

I got the pleasure of playing Godfall before it launched and this is a game that has to be played at 60 FPS. It features fast-paced combat and requires quick reflexes.

Godfall has a ton of options for the players to tweak around with. The game is quite demanding at its highest graphical settings. What I like about the game is that even dropping the graphical quality doesn’t impact the visuals much.

Meaning, players can run the game at 60 FPS while maintaining visuals quality. As I mentioned above, I am targeting a mid-range PC for this Godfall optimization guide. The following is that I mean by a mid-range PC.

Intel Core-i5-9400F 6 Core/6 Thread CPU
Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 AMP Edition 6GB
16GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 2666 MHz
1TB XPG GAMMIX S5 SSD
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

The reason why I chose a GTX 1060 is simple, this GPU might be old but still packs a punch and there are a lot of PC users that have this GPU. You can compare the performance with this system and scale it according to your own system.

Also, If you have an SSD, I recommend that you install Godfall there as it’ll not only help with the loading time but will also help with texture streaming.

With that out of the way, let’s start with the Godfall PC Optimization Guide. The following are the Godfall graphics settings along with a brief explanation and a recommended option to play the game at 1080p/60 FPS.

Display Mode

Keep this setting at Fullscreen as you might lose performance on any other option.

Vertical Sync

Vertical Synchronization eliminates screen tearing by matching the rendered FPS with the display refresh rate. Enabling V.sync limits the game’s Max FPS to the display refresh rate. Meaning, if you have a 60 Hz monitor, enabling V.sync will limit the game to 60 FPS. I recommend that you keep this setting on as screen tearing can ruin the game experience.

Recommended: On

View Distance

This graphics setting in Godfall controls the level of detail for buildings and objects at a distance. The higher the setting, the higher the detail distant building and objects will have. But, this view distance comes at the cost of performance. I recommend that you set this one to High.

Recommended: High

Shadow Quality

Shadow Quality setting determines the resolution of shadows and the distance at which shadows are renders. The higher the setting, the higher resolution shadows will be and the further will be the render distance for the shadows. I recommend Medium for this setting as shadows can really take a toll on performance.

Recommended: Medium

Anti-Aliasing

Anti-Aliasing eliminates aliasing or jagged edges in-game to smooth out the overall image quality. Usually, PC video games give players the option to choose which AA solution they want to use like TAA, FXAA, SMAA, and more. But, Godfall doesn’t give these options instead we only have Low, Medium, High, and Epic. Not sure which AA solution the game uses but Medium is a good balance of image quality and performance.

Recommended: Medium

Texture Detail

Texture Detail setting in Godfall controls the resolution of the textures. As you increase the setting, textures will be higher resolution and detailed and they’ll use more VRAM. Luckily, GTX 1060 comes with 6GB of VRAM and you can set this one to High.

Recommended: High

Visual Effects

Godfall isn’t very informative about its graphics settings. While I am sure but, Visual Effects setting controls the quality of particle effects. Godfall loves particle effects as there are tons of them on-screen while in combat which can tank performance. Keep this setting at Low.

Recommended: Low

Post Processing

Not sure what effect this Godfall graphics setting controls but keep it at Low to save performance.

Recommended: Low

Foliage Quality

Foliage Quality setting determines the quality of trees and bushes in Godfall. Set this setting to High.

Recommended: High

Motion Blur

Motion blur smooths the overall gameplay by adding blur when the camera moves. This doesn’t have much impact on performance and most PC gamers don’t use. Turn it on if you like.

Lens Flare

Lens Flare also doesn’t have any impact on Godfall’s PC performance. This setting causes the light to spread as it does in real life when viewing a light source through a camera. Turn it on if you like this effect.

Optimized Graphics Settings For 60 FPS

The following are the optimized graphics settings for Godfall to run it at 60 FPS. You can see these optimized settings in action in the video below. As you can see, the game maintains 60 FPS all the time and only rarely dips below 60FPS.

Display Mode – Fullscreen
View Distance – High
Shadow Quality- Medium
Anti-Aliasing – Medium
Texture Detail – High
Visual Effects – Low
Post Processing – Low
Foliage Quality – High
Motion Blur – Player choice
Lens Flare – Player choice

Other Optimizations And Tweaks

There are some tweaks and optimization that players can perform outside the game to get a 60FPS experience without compromising image quality. The following are some optimizations that players can perform to further improve the game’s performance.

Nvidia Control Panel Tweaks
Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > select Godfall and make the following changes and hit apply.

Anti-aliasing-FXAA – “Off”
Anti-aliasing-Gamma Correction – “Off”
CUDA GPUs – “All”
Low Latency Mode – Ultra.
Set Power Management to “Prefer Maximum Performance”
Shader Cache – “On” only if you are using an HDD. Don’t need to enable it for an SSD.
Set Texture filtering – Quality to “High Performance”
Triple Buffering – “Off”
Set Vertical Syn to “Use the 3D Application Setting”

Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling
This is an option added to Windows 10 by Microsft recently. However, Microsoft is actively working on this feature and enabling it can give mixed results. If you are using an old GPU then it’s best to keep it off as it’ll degrade performance instead of improving it. Also, if enabling it degrades performance, then turn it off. To activate Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling, open Settings > System > Display > click Graphics Settings at the bottom and enable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling and restart your PC.

That is all for our Godfall PC Optimization Guide with tips on how to get 60 FPS. If you are facing errors and issues with other PC games or your PC then also see our hub for commonly occurring PC errors and their fixes.

In Godfall you have Valorplates that act as your armor. These Valorplate are pretty much the same when it comes to actual gameplay but they are a bit different in effects and characteristics. Not to mention the aesthetics of each are different as well. In this Godfall guide, we are going to go over all the different Valorplate in the different and the special abilities that they have to offer.

Godfall Valorplates And Their Special Abilities

Note: The damage numbers and stats that we have mentioned here are base stats and will scale up as you upgrade and use augments.

The following are the different Valorplates that you can forge in Godfall:

Silvermane

This is the Valorplate that you start off with. The Valorplate offers +10% weapon technique charge speed, shield charge speed and polarity attack charge speed. This means that the cooldowns of these abilities are going to be lowered by 10% right off the bat, so you can use them more often. Increase your Spirit with gear pieces and you should be able to have pretty low cooldowns for your abilities.

Godfall Valorplates

For the archon fury, you summon 3 spirit warriors that help you out in battle. While the ability is active you also get +300% weapon technique charge speed, shield charge speed and polarity attack charge speed. So you can use your abilities even more often. You also get +30% damage whenever you defeat an enemy with a weapon technique, shield ability or polarity attack.

Mesa

You could call this the poison type valorplate in Godfall. It features a 10% chance to inflict poison which is going to deal damage over time to the enemies that are inflicted.

Godfall Valorplates

The archon fury ability for this valorplate sends out a shockwave that deals 30 earth damage. While the ability is active you have +90% chance to inflict poison and +100% damage to poisoned enemies. You will also deal earth damage.

So while you have the archon fury ability enabled you will deal double the damage to poisoned enemies.

Hinterclaw

This is the crit chance type of valorplate in Godfall. Right off the bat, it offers +5% critical hit chance. This would be your pick if you want to buff your critical hit chance.

For the archon fury, you summon 3 spirit warriors that help you out in battle. While the ability is active you get +30% critical hit chance and +15% critical hit damage whenever you defeat an enemy. This will stack up to 150% in total or 10 times. These would be really cool if you combine this with dual blades.

Illumina

The valorplate offers +15% weak point damage. When the archon fury is active it sends out a shockwave which is going to deal 7 physical damage and also reveal the weak points of the enemies around you. The shockwave goes out every 7 seconds.

Illumina

While the ability is active, you also get +40% weapon damage and +40% weak point damage when you perform a deathblow. Hitting weak points does take some precision but if that is something that you are interested in then this is the valorplate for you.

Aegishorn

You can think of this as the tank or support class. By default the valorplate takes 5% less damage. For the archon fury, you summon 3 spirit warriors that help you out in battle.

Aegishorn

When the ability is active, you and allies around you take 30% less damage. When you get hit three projectiles are fired that deal 149 damage. If you are playing with a team and want to help them out then this is one of the valorplates that we recommend you pick in Godfall.

Moebius

Moebius excels at curse damage. The valorplate has a 10% chance of inflicting a curse on an enemy. The archon fury ability summons 3 void sentinels to help you out in combat.

Moebius

When the ability is active you get +90% chance to inflict a curse and +100% damage to cursed enemies. Your attacks will also deal void damage.

Vertigo

This valorplate offers 10% chance to inflict shock. The archon fury ability sends a shockwave that deals 30 air damage.

Vertigo

When the ability is active you get +90% chance to shock enemies and +100 damage to shocked enemies. Your attacks deal air damage.

Typhon

This can be seen as the opposite of Pheonix. By default, the valorplate features +10% chance to inflict chill. Chill can slow down enemies. The archon ability summons 3 water sentinels to help you in battle.

Typhon

When the ability is active you get +90% chance to inflict chill and +100% damage to chilled enemies. Your attacks will deal water damage.

Bulwark

Bulwark valorplate has a +10% chance to inflict bleed. So enemies will bleed over time. The archon ability summons 3 physical sentinels to help you in battle.

Bulwark Godfall Valorplates

When the ability is active, you get +90% chance to inflict blood and +100% damage to bleeding enemies. Your attacks will deal physical damage.

Phoenix

This is a valorplate that you can unlock pretty early on in the game. It has +10% chance to inflict ignite. The archon ability sends out a shockwave that does 30 fire damage.

Godfall Valorplates

While creating your build and picking the best Valorplate in Godfall you will need to sort out your attributes. These attributes are Might, Spirit and Vitality. But what do these mean? In this Godfall attributes guide, we go over what Might, Spirit and Vitality actually do and why they are important.

What Do Attributes Do In Godfall?

Godfall Attributes

The following is what the three attributes do in Godfall:

  • Might is your DPS or damage per second. If you are looking to make a build that has a lot of damage then you need to focus not only on the damage of your weapon but the Might of your build as well. Might is going to determine the power of your attacks and the speed of your attacks.
  • Spirit is related to the cooldown of your abilities. The higher the Spirit you have for your build, the lower the cooldown of your abilities.
  • Vitality is basically your health or the amount of damage that you can take before you die.

Attributes in Godfall can be increased by using certain gear pieces. Gear pieces such as rings can increase certain stats. The higher the tier of the gear piece the more effects you get. The Ring Of Noxious Power shown in the image above is a rare ring. So not only does it have a leeching effect but it also increased takedown damage by 10%.

A common ring for example is only going to have a single effect but a rare ring is going to have two effects. These gear pieces also have a level requirement so you need to have the required level in order to equip them.

This is what the different attributes in Godfall do. If you are interested in completing the game 100% then you can check out our trophies guide.

Godfall is the first confirmed game that is going to run on the PS5. We have seen a few glimpses of the game but here we have some new information that you might want to know about. Godfall is inspired by Dark Souls and other games. It is also going to support ray tracing.

Godfall Details You Need To Know About

The following are some new details about Godfall that you need to know about:

If Godfall Coming To PS4?

Godfall is intended for the PS5 and is “genuinely tailored to run only on Sony’s new console” according to PS Magazine. It also mentions that at the time of writing there is no PS4 version in the works and that there is not going to be a cross-gen patch.

Where To Play Godfall On PC?

At launch, the game will be available on the Epic Games Store only. It is a timed exclusive and could release on other platforms later on.

Inspiration From Dark Souls And Novels

The developer has referenced Monster Hunter: World in terms of gameplay. You have plenty of huge melee weapons that you can use such as Warhammer and human-sized swords. The game is also inspired by Dark Souls. You can have duels there are also elements of countering and landing heavy strikes.

The visual style of the game has been inspired by The Stormlight Archive, The First Law, and the Foundation series.

Ray Tracing Support

Godfall is going to feature ray tracing.

A Loot-Slasher

The game has been described as a loot-slasher and you will be excited to know that some of the team members have worked on Destiny 2 as well. So this is going to be an exciting co-op game with rich experiences.

Rewards For Aggressive Play

The devs have confirmed that the players are going to be rewarded for aggressive play. You will need to time every hit perfectly in order to deal the maximum damage possible.

Elemental Realms

The game is divided into elemental realms of Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Spirit.

Armor Details

We have seen the big bulky armor in the teaser of the game. These armors are from one of the last remaining knight’s order. There are different types of armor called Valorplates. Your class is going to depend on the type of armor that you wear but you will be able to find new armor as you progress the game.

There you have it folks. Godfall is going to have elements of Dark Souls, Monster Hunter: World and even Destiny. Let us know what you think about the game and what you want it to be like.
