The ability to override machines in Horizon: Zero Dawn is an interesting mechanic. Hacking in the game allows you to have allies on the field and even use them as mounts. In this guide, we’ve detailed everything you need to know about how to override machines in Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Override Machines

In order to override machines in HZD, you’ll need to complete “The Womb of the Mountain” that requires them to defeat some Corrupted Machines. As a reward for doing so, you’ll receive an Override Device. By using the Override Device, you’ll be able to put different machines in your control.

The duration for which you can override a machine depends on its type. After that duration is over, the machine will immediately become hostile and you’ll need to deal with it. In order to override a machine, you’ll need to carefully sneak behind it – without being detected – and then press the on-screen command to do so. As mentioned earlier, you’ll only be able to override a machine for a short while. Once overridden, you’ll be able to ride some machines or use them to clear out an area.

During the start, you’ll only be able to override a limited number of machines. To be able to override more machines, you’ll need to find and complete Cauldrons – these are a type of dungeons with a boss at the end. Once you’re through the Cauldron, you’ll gain access to more machines to override. Lastly, do note that you’ll only be able to use Striders, Chargers, and Broadheads as mounts in HZD. However, if you die while on a mount, you’ll lose the mount forever and will have to hack another machine to use as a mount.
