Communication is a key when it comes to multiplayer video games and Discord is the gamer’s top choice to communicate and share gaming stuff. However, some Discord users face the issue of the service not picking up any audio from the microphone.

“Discord Mic Not Detecting” issue can pop up for multiple reasons and here we will help you fix this glitch. Before we start, just make sure the microphone or the headset isn’t at fault here. Connect it to another PC and see if it works there.

Fix #1

The first fix for this Discord issue is a simple one. Just log out and then log back in, however, even if it works for you, this fix is only temporary.

To log out, click on the settings icon, located at the bottom-left corner next to your username. Scroll down and click Log Out and confirm by again clicking Log Out when prompted. Now, log in again and the issue should be resolved.

Fix #2

One reason why Discord isn’t taking input from the microphone could be Windows 10 Privacy Settings. Click on the search bar and type “Privacy Settings” and open privacy settings. Click on “Microphone” and set “Allow apps access to the microphone” to ON. After this, Discord should be taking input from the mic.

If the above fix didn’t work for you then you can try giving administrative rights to Discord. The app might not have the necessary privileges to be able to use the microphone.

Right-click on Discord’s exe > properties > “Compatibility” tab > check “Run this program as an administrator”. Apply the change and Discord not detecting mic issue will be fixed.

Fix #4

Another fix for Discord’s mic not detecting issue is tweaking the automatic input sensitivity. Chances are you tweaked the settings and toggled the automatic input sensitivity. When this happens, the manual sensitivity is set to minimum by default.

Click on the settings icon right next to your username and then select Voice > Video (under App Settings). Under “Input Sensitivity” and toggle the Automatically determine input sensitivity if it’s toggled off. Now speak into the microphone and see if the bar is moving when you speak. If the ba moves then the issue is resolved.

If the toggle for automatic sensitivity was on then disable it and slide the bar to the right and leave it in the middle. Speak into the microphone or headset and if the green bar is moving then Discord is taking input from your microphone.

Fix #5

Another reason behind mic not detecting could be that the right input device isn’t selected for Discord. This sometimes happens when you are using a laptop with a built-in microphone.

In this case, DIscord uses the default input and ignores any other headset microphone. Click on the settings icon, select Voice & Video, under “Input Device” select your microphone from the headset, usually, it has the same name as your headset.

Make sure the Input Volume slider is maxed out. This should get the headset microphone working.

In case there are a lot of options and you don’t know which microphone belongs to your headset and follow these steps. On Win 10, click on the search bar and type “Change System Sounds”, open it and go to the “Recording” tab. Just talk into the headset microphone and see which icon’s level lights up and that’s your headset’s microphone.

Fix #6

Enabling the exclusive mode for input and output devices can cause problems for apps like Discord to actually use a microphone. Click on the search bar and type “Change System Sounds”, open it and go to the “Recording” tab.

Select the microphone you want to use and click on “Properties”. Go to the “Advanced” tab and uncheck the box under Exclusive Mode. Apply the change and restart your system.

Fix #7

Resetting Discord’d voice settings can also salve the problem. Click on the user settings icon > Voice & Video > scroll down and click on “Reset Voice Settings”. Click on okay when prompted. Unplug and reconnect your headset or microphone and Discord should be using your desired input device.

If all the fixes don’t work for you then the last thing you can do is change the input mode to “Push To Talk”. The only downside to this is that you need to assign a dedicated button which you need to press whenever you are talking into the microphone.

Click on the user settings icon > Voice & Video > under “Input Mode” check “Push To Talk”. As you check the push to talk box a new menu will appear just under it giving you two new options “Shortcut” and “Push to talk release delay”.

Click on the shortcut and press the key that you want to bind to push to talk. As for “Push to talk release delay” tweaking it depends on you as it only determines the time that Discord takes to cut off the voice after you push the button.
