How to Beat Thor in God of War: Ragnarok

God of War players have been looking forward to an all-out brawl with Thor Odinson since he appeared at their doorstep at the end of the original game. Luckily, this brawl happens only a couple of hours into God of War: Ragnarok. Thor is an incredibly formidable foe, and given how early on you need to go through him, it can be a challenging experience, especially at harder difficulty options. In this guide, we have shared tips and strategies to help you easily beat Thor, the God of Thunder in God of War: Ragnarok.

You battle it out with Thor near the end of Surviving Fimbulwinter. After arriving at your house, you are pulled to another area for this boss fight. Like a lot of other bosses in God of War: Ragnarok, the fight has multiple phases.

In the first phase, which is just a fistfight, you must watch out for a couple of unblockable attacks — do not miss those red rings. One is his ground-pound attack which deals a lot of damage in an area. The best way to avoid it is to run away as far as possible. Other than that, he will charge at you to throw you against a wall for some damage. He can also follow it up with a 3-hit combo. To dodge this one, you should try to dodge to the side. Try to find opportunities to dish out some damage (primarily from parrying) to trigger a QTE, after which the second phase will begin.

In the second phase, Thor will start using his trusted hammer, Mjolnir, with a couple of new attacks. Most of his attacks during the second phase are ranged (unblockable), so you will need to dodge quite a lot to avoid taking any considerable damage.

In addition, he can also hurl Mjolnir in your direction and call it back to whittle away at a decent chunk of your HP. You will also notice a few pillars scattered around the area — these need to be your primary source of damage. You need to interact with these pillars to throw them at Thor to deal a good amount of damage.

In the last phase, Thor will start to rain lightning bolts in the area. You will notice red circles in the area after he slams the ground a couple of times — this is your hint to start running away to avoid getting hit by lightning bolts. Aside from this, he will retain his array of unblockable attacks from the earlier phases. Once again, keep an eye out for those red circles and keep working on his HP, primarily through parrying.

Also, do not forget to use your Spartan Fury to gain some HP and extra damage, which helps a lot. Moreover, if you can fill his ‘Stagger’ meter faster, the fight becomes much more manageable. But since you do not have a lot of HP at this point in the game, you should try to take things slowly if possible. Once you have defeated Thor Odinson, you will unlock the ‘Blood Debt’ trophy.
